The days of lugging bags of ice to the hunting and fishing cabin are finally over. I found the Engel “MT80F-U1”, being powered by either 24V or 12V I now easily carry supplies in the bed of my truck into our cabin using the Slide Lock. Once we arrive it’s an easy transfer from being powered by 12 volt vehicle power to being powered by solar panels.
I love the fact that when we go hunting in the spring or fall we can
take some food with us and still have plenty of room left over for any game we happen to bag. Being out in the middle of nowhere has its advantages and disadvantages. One of the major disadvantages is a lack of power for accessories and ‘creature comforts’ that you might like to bring with you.
My friends and I have solved our power issue at our cabin by installing solar panels, a charge controller and a small battery bank consisting of wal-mart special deep cycle batteries. We have a 12volt refrigerator/freezer, an HD 32” 12V TV and even an oven for when cooking in the fireplace isn’t practical.
Out of all the modifications we’ve made to our small get-away the one I value the most is the refrigerator/freezer combo and solar power. We’ve taken food out to camp for a weekend and brought both fresh fish, squirrel and venison back with us come Sunday. A quick deep freeze ensures that our game stays fresh. A quick carry to the truck, plug it into the lighter socket and we’re off! Things really couldn’t get much more convenient when it comes to safe food storage and peace of mind.
